Recently on a random Wednesday our lead photographer Emilia and social media queen / stylist assistant Sam decided to head into the city to meet up with rock fashion legend, Christian Benner, and tour his studio. Tagging along for the trip was none other than our fave little blonde alien princess, I Hate Blonde! Dressed up in Gypsy Warrior’s newest Rock N’ Roll capsule, we lurk around his studio and ogle all his custom, handmade jackets and tees! Read on for our exclusive pics and an interview with the artist himself!
The It’s Only Rock & Roll Crop Tee
Christian is known for his handpainted custom leather jackets and majorly distressed tees; we’re talking serious, 1980’s style cut-ups, safety pin magic, even burning and acid treatments.
This guitar was owned by Jimmy Page; it’s the one he wrote Kashmir on! You know, no big deal.
Now, we sit down with Christian himself and see what makes this true rock and roll fashion icon tick.
GW: First off, what inspires you??
CB: I am inspired by many different genres of music. My record collection is a huge part of my life and each day depending on what my mood is I will play a record from a certain era and that sets the tone of the day.
GW: Your pieces are a mix of art and fashion. Who are some of your favorite artists?
CB: Yves Klein, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.
GW: Aside from your own show, whose #NYFW show did you love?
CB: I actually stayed away from shows this year as I find it distracting. I don’t like to see what other designers or artists are doing as it allows my art to come out more raw.
GW: Of all the people you have ever worked with, who would you say is your muse?
CB: My old friend Lady Gaga. I had the chance to watch her grow from day 1 and when I finally got the chance to work with her in the present day I was able to really create something to complement her present style.
GW: If you got to go to a dream concert for three bands, alive or dead, who would you see?
CB: Hendrix, Zeppelin and Sabbath all during their early careers!
Until next time!
xx
