In honor of one of my personal favorite sales maybe ever, the 30% off Moto Jackets + Black Boots Sale (yes, hello, stocking up on everything I will ever need… until next month anyway) we put together a list of our ten favorite most iconic leather jacket looks from the silver screen. Head over to the sale and recreate your own, or just peep this list and then watch all the movies tonight with popcorn and beer and tell people you’re going out with some cool kids.
Oh, and need more leather styling tips? Peep our how-to post here!
10. Cry-Baby
The first movie we could think of was obviously this one; whether you’re ogling Johnny Depp or recreating Traci Lords look, this movie is just chock full of major leather inspo.
9. Charlie Sheen in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
We all dropped our collective panties for this principals office bad boy, and it’s no wonder; look at that slouchy tee and leather combo. It screams “I give zero fucks, but also let’s like go somewhere.” If anyone could warm up Jennifer Grey, it’s this dude.
8. Drew Barrymore in Poison Ivy
Young Drew really could do no wrong; even when she was playing a dad-loving kinda-psycho in Poison Ivy, she was still fresh faced and adorable. We love a big-shouldered 80’s power leather, and love it even more when it’s coupled with giant blonde hair.
7. Kristin Stewart in The Runaways
So, I honestly don’t care much for Kristin Stewart (anyone who accuses women of “not doing enough” is majorly blind, in my eyes) but as Joan Jett in the Runaways biopic she could get it. Joan single-handedly pioneered the tough girl punk look, so much so that we named our own moto jacket after the Runaways major hit.
6. James Dean in just about anything
We don’t know if this counts, but we are going to include it anyway. Rebel Without a Cause? Perfection. And who better to include on this list than the gent who engineered the white tee and leather look that remains so popular with bloggers and badasses alike?
5. Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture Show
FRANK-ly (puns) we could steal this jacket right off set as is and wear the fuck out of it tonight. Pin game strong even before that was a thing, PLUS fringe?! Yas, kween. It also seems unfair that his legs and this fishnet-heel situation is way better than ours will ever be. Alas, we wish we could time warp back to the moment we first saw this look so we could relive the joy over and over.
4. Thora Birch in Ghost World
Enid: You know, it’s not like I’m some modern punk, dickhead! It’s obviously a 1977 original punk rock look, but I guess Johnny Fuckface over there is too stupid to realize it!
Rebecca: I didn’t really get it either.
Enid: Everyone’s too stupid!
Don’t fret, Enid, we get it. We really get it.
3. Alicia Silverstone in Clueless
This definitely isn’t THE most iconic look in the entire movie, but it is one of our faves. Everything about it, from the chemistry of these two to Josh’s dumb soul patch and geeky turtleneck, makes us swoon; it’s no wonder these two fell in love, just look at them. And that jacket.
2. Chloe Webb in Sid and Nancy: Love Kills
Another punk music biopic? We had to! Sid and Nancy were the iconic punk couple; we love their fucked-up love story, almost as much as we love their classic punk looks. Chloe Webb does an amazing job of portraying Nancy Spungen, down to the bottle blonde hair and safety-pin studded moto. Get your own punk look with a badass choker.
1. Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in Grease
Obviously! The classic “tell me about it, stud” reveal was made 10000 better by the fact that the new and improved Sandy shows up rocking – what else- a leather moto, cementing the piece in our mind as the ultimate cool girl staple. Good girls wear bobby socks, bad girls wear leather jackets. Oh, and how cute was that scene in the end where they fly away in the car, like they were propelled by their own amazingness?!
That about wraps up our picks. Who did we leave off? Let us know in the comments!
