Whether they were grunge-flannel-alt-girl-cool or neon-spandex-fabulous, the TV stars of the 90’s had it going on. We all knew them, we all loved them, we all wanted to steal their closets. Here are the 90’s TV-stars we idolized every day after school, and tried desperately to emulate with allowance-funded trips to Claires to stock up on tattoo chokers and Lisa Frank stickers for our trapper-keepers.
1. Lisa Bonet as Denise in The Cosby Show
Before Zoe or Willow there was Lisa. The perpetual cool-girl, with gorgeous natural hair and incredible patterned outfits. We so longed to have even one iota of her coolness, though we knew in our hearts it wasn’t to be so.
2. Clare Danes and AJ Langer as Angela and Rayanne on My So-Called Life
This show remains incredibly relevant and touching to those of us who grew up watching it… and it’s not just for the style inspiration by the angsty Angela and hard-partying Rayanne.
3. Alicia Silverstone as Cher from Clueless
Ok, ok, we know it’s technically a movie but we obviously couldn’t leave her out. I mean, as if! Plus, there was a Clueless TV Show, and it was rad!
4. Amanda Bynes as herself on The Amanda Show
Before she went wonderfully off the deep end, she was a cutie-pie TV host with butterfly clips and mad floral print. We still love you forever, Amanda Bynes!
5. Danielle Fishel as Topanga on Boy Meets World
Tell me this look isn’t super relevant right now. We so envied her thick hair and endless supply of turtlenecks.
6. Jen Aniston as Rachel on Friends
Aside from her statement hair, Jen Aniston killed it with iconic 90’s looks (like this turtleneck-plaid-combo here).
7. Also, Lisa Kudrow in everything.
We would have also included Lisa Kudrow as Pheobe on Friends, but we honestly prefer her as pink-loving Post-It-Inventor Michelle in Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion.
8. SJP as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City
This show was sliiightly too old for most of us to watch (though some of us did anyway) but even now her style provides serious inspo. Everyone had great style, but of course Carrie was the star!
9. Every single cast member from Saved By The Bell
Such as neon-loving Kelly Kapowski, played by Tiffani Thiessen…
…and fabulous, outfits-perpetually-on-fleek Lisa Turtle, played by Lark Voorhies.
10. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Nothing we love more than a pastel-loving, vampire-fighting kickass babe. We would have included Willow too, but truth be told we were never so much a fan. Not everyone in the 90’s had great style!
11. Melissa Joan Hart as Clarissa in Clarissa Explains It All
We were envious of so much of Clarissa’s life (except her doofy brother)! Her incredible fashion options, her ability to indeed explain it all, and her cute neighbor with the ladder. #Goals
12. Keri Russell as Felicity Porter in Felicity
Some of us watched this tale with wide eyes, envious of Felicity’s college dorm, her cute love interests, and of course her practical, minimal fashion choices. So grown up! So city-chic! Plus, Converse!
13. All the girls from Charmed
This should really go without saying, but not only were they witches but they were SUPER cute! Hello, metallic halter tops!?
14. Katie Holmes as Joey in Dawson’s Creek
Sardonic smile, overalls, and a bandana. The epitome of 90’s in one character.
Oh, and we couldn’t forget about Disney Channel Movies either.
15. Tyra Banks as Eve in Life-Size
There were so many incredible looks in this movie we had a hard time picking just one. But this iconic, two-piece fluorescent orange ensemble complete with furry cardigan reminds us of Lisa Frank, and we’re in.
16. Katherine Heigl as Alexia in Wish Upon a Star
The ultimate mean older sister we never had, Alexia’s whole ‘tude (and boyfriend-getting abilities) was admirable to our sarcasm-loving pre-teen selves. The cherry on top was her perfect 90’s fashion sense.
And we couldn’t forget about our cartoon idols either!
17. Judy Funnie from Doug
The OG beatnik, with a fabulous undercut to boot. Hello, trend forecasting!
18. Quinn and her gang from Daria
We know they were supposed to be a joke (and certainly they kind of were) but we were super envious of Quinn (especially during her all-black phase) and her gang of loyal-to-the-end pals.
19. Spinelli from Recess
In a look far ahead of her time, the right-hand-woman of TJ Detweiler rocked a leather jacket over a dress, moto boots and a chunky beanie. Plus sass envied by all.
20. Debbie from The Wild Thornberrys
We channel this queen on a daily basis, frankly. Between her flannel, slouchy jeans aesthetic, her makeup looks and obsession with magazine culture, she is basically our spirit twin.
Who was your fave 90’s icon?
xx
